Summer review

Our band has had a jam-packed summer in 2017! We are super excited to update you on what has been going on. This year we have had a lot more opportunities to perform and we are extremely thankful to those who have put in a lot of hard work to make it all possible. We also hope to continue to explore similar opportunities and grow as a band.

The first summer event was the annual CAPCA/BAS Junior Steelband Panorama Competition. This event allows young people of 21 and under to play as part of a steel band and compete with other steel bands for the title of Junior Panorama Champions. Players experience longer and more complex music than they are used to. We were delighted to to have gained 2nd place! We entered with a song called ‘red, white and black‘ composed by Len ‘Boogsie’ Sharp and Christopher Morris. One of our young players described taking part as the “Best competitive experience with my own band“. Those who played felt a sense of pride as they represented their bands. It was also really nice to have support from older members of the band and members of the wider pan community. Considering this was our first time entering the competition, this is an amazing achievement and we hope to build on this over the next few years.

We also hosted the 3rd annual North London Blockorama, at Lordship Recreation Ground in Tottenham. This was an exhilarating day full of fun, family and food! We were honoured to once again have 3 talented bands participate: Ebony Steel Band; Croydon Steel Orchestra; and London all stars, a big thank you to them all for their fantastic musical contributions. Our summer ended with us heading up north for the 50th anniversary of the Leeds West Indian carnival. It was a weekend filled with fun and laughter for all the members of the band who took part. For some of us, this was our first experience playing on a float as part of a carnival procession. We would like to give a shout out to Christopher Friend for being our photographer/videographer and for supplying us with pan sticks. You really hooked us up!

As you can see our summer has been a rollercoaster of fun. We hope that next summer can be just as impressive. Many thanks to the Arts Council England for funding our projects. For now, we are practicing hard in preparation for our upcoming winter concert in December. We hope to see you there!
